They are the varsity sports teams of the University of Houston. The Houston Cougars are also known to many as the Coogs, UH or Houston. Their nickname as the Houston Cougars was made by their early physical education instructor and former head football coach whose name is John R. Bender. In the season of 1946, the first varsity intercollegiate football of the Houston Cougars fielded. At present, they are locking horns in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Football Bowl Subdivision as a part of Conference USA. Moreover, they started to play their home games in the Robertson Stadium. In the season of 1996, after the dissolution of the Southwest Conference, the Houston Cougars then turned out be the charter members of the Conference USA as a component of the West Division. The colors that are representing the team are albino white and scarlet red. They have the mascot that is named as the Shasta. At present, the athletic director of the Houston Cougars is Mack Rhoades.
