Historical Milestones
Charles Woodson was one of the best defenders in college football during his time with the University of Michigan Wolverines. As the only defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy, Woodson showed he could lockdown receivers and force turnovers at will. In his final year at Michigan, Woodson won a National Championship, the Walter Cam Award, the Jim Thorpe Award, and was named Big Ten Player of the Year. With such a stellar college career, it’s no surprise that Woodson was selected 4th overall in the 1998 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders.
The future Hall of Famer lived up to expectation from his college days, winning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1998. Over his seventeen-year NFL career, Woodson racked up 9 Pro Bowl Selections with the Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers. In a 2002 AFC playoff match against the New England Patriots, Woodson seemed to have clinched the game for the Raiders by forcing a fumble and sacking Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, but the ruling was controversially overturned which made everyone remember the “tuck rule.” In 2006, Woodson would sign a $52 million contract with the Green Bay Packers. In his first year with the Packers, Woodson led the NFC with 8 interceptions while also returning punts on special teams. In 2009, Woodson won AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year as he showed his dominance over opposing pass catchers. Woodson became one of only a few NFL players to play in Pro Bowls in 3 different decades and finished his career with 1,105 career tackles, 33 forced fumbles, 65 interceptions, and 13 defensive touchdowns, solidifying his place as one of the best defenders to play the game.
