About Tennessee Volunteers Tailgating and Outdoors
Tennessee Volunteers are an integral part of the University of Tennessee’s sports program. So is the women’s division of players who are called the Lady Volunteers. Together these two divisions have given this University some of their greatest hits of all times. They have changed how the state and the country view the orange jersey and their mascot, Smokey.
By around 1964, there was a change and the new coach Doug Dickey promised some good results. He wanted to defer from the normal and bring about some changes in the way the men’s football team played their games. He started his rebuilding program by changing the single wing formation offense that the team was used to into the ‘T formation offense’. Secondly he changed the helmets of the team making sure that the ‘T’ was prominent on the helmets and ruled out the necessity of keeping the numbers on the helmet. These changes caught the nation’s fancy and were among the most demanded memorabilia which included

Lastly he wanted to create a new and unique way in which the football team entered the grounds during the pregame ritual. All these changes that he undertook have since remained with the team. Along with these changes he was able to sustain the team’s winning strikes throughout the six seasons that he was there. After the season of 1969 ended he left the Tennessee Volunteers to coach the
Florida Gators of the University of Florida.
