In 2005 the University brought in Bruce Pearl who was coaching the Milwaukee Panthers of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. and earned a place among the Elite Eight. Although they were defeated in the next round this was the first time they had achieved this honor.
The Tennessee Volunteers have only 2 retired numbers and they include 53 of Bernard King and 22 of Ernie Grunfeld. Grunfeld had played for a total of 9 years in the NBA. He has also earned a gold medal at the Olympic Games played in Montreal.
