Founded in 1972 as the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association (WHA), the Coyotes joined the NHL in 1979 and moved back to Phoenix in 1996. For seven years, their home ice was at the US Airways Center, then known as America West Arena, but later moved to Jobing.com Arena by 2003.
The team began playing as the Winnipeg Jets and were the most successful team in the short-lived WHA, having won the Avco World Trophy, the league's championship trophy, three times and making it to the finals five out of seven seasons.
In 1979, the team became one of the four teams admitted to the NHL as part of a merger. The team was moved to Phoenix for the 1996-1997 seasons on December 1995. A name-the-team contest yielded the nickname "Coyotes."
