The home of the Pennsylvania State Nittany Lions is Beaver Stadium. It is an outdoor stadium found in the University Park on the Penn State campus. It was named after James A. Beaver, a lawyer from Bellefonte during the time of the Civil War. He became part of the Union Army as a second lieutenant and eventually rose to the rank of brigadier general before he was discharged from service in 1864. He became a superior court judge and a Pennsylvania governor. He was also a past president of the Penn State University board of trustees and is credited to have a huge influence on the development of the University. James beaver died in 1914.
According to sources, Beaver Stadium is the second largest stadium in the entire Western Hemisphere next to Michigan Stadium and fourth largest around the world.
Before the construction of a stadium, all sports events in Penn State were held on the Old Main lawn area. The maiden game played there was the game between Penn State and the Western university of Pennsylvania, now the University of Pittsburgh and won by the home team in 1893.
The team changed home in 1909 when the New Beaver Field was opened near the present location of the Rec Hall. It has a capacity of 30,000 people and became the university’s stadium until 1930 when it was dismantled. The whole dismantled stadium was relocated to the eastern side of the campus where it was reassembled and extended to accommodate 46,284 people. It was renamed Beaver Stadium.
Periodically, the stadium underwent expansions, the biggest of which was recently in 2001. From the last expansion to 90,000 the stadium was extended to hold 107,282 persons. In 2006, improvements on its structural support including replacement of an old railing to replace the one that collapsed in the Ohio State game in 2005.
The stadium has recently been witness to record-breaking crowds that flock to watch the games, the biggest of which was in the September 2002 game against Nebraska. A record of 110,753 watched as the Nittany Lions defeated the Huskers 40-7. The team featured Jimmy Kennedy who has the Jimmy Kennedy Penn State Nittany Lions Signed 8x10, Michael Haynes, Anthony Adams who has the Anthony Adams Autographed Penn State Nittany Lions 8x10 Photo, Bryant Johnson, Larry Johnson and Bryan Scott, all of whom got drafted in the 2003 NFL Drafts.
