In the season of 1989, the team was founded as an expansion team. The team’s name was officially announced to the public on July 27, 1986. They are one of the four franchises that were awarded then by the National Basketball Association. With the leadership of William DuPont III, James and Robert Hewitt, the team was able to become the first ever major-league professional sports franchise in the Orlando Area. Moreover, the first team coach of the Orlando Magic was Matt Guokas. The team was then sold to the DeVos Family on September 19, 1991. The first home arena of the Orlando Magic was in the Amway Arena that was opened in the season of 1989. The Arena was actually known as the Orlando Arena.

They have won five division titles in 1995, 1996, 2008, 2009 and 2010 and 2 conference titles in 1995 and 2009.

It was in 1992 that Orlando Magic won the lottery to get the first draft. With this the team picked what would be its best player, Louisiana State University’s Shaquille O’Neal. It was in the following year that Hardaway joined the team to complete the pair. It was during the Hardaway-O’Neal era that the team won its first Division and its first Conference Title.
