The New York Mets, out of the borough of Queens, New York, play in the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s National League. Founded in 1962 to replace New York’s departed Giants and Dodgers teams, the Mets originally played their games in Manhattan’s famed Polo Grounds while a new stadium was being built. From 1964 to 2008 the Mets called Shea Stadium home before moving in to state of the art Citi Field for the 2009 season.
During the team’s first season in 1962, the Mets had a record of 40-120, the worst regular season record since the MLB went to a 162 game schedule. They never finished better than second to last until the 1969 Mets roster made an incredible run and were known as the “Miracle Mets”. The Miracle Mets beat the Baltimore Orioles in the Fall Classic, which is still considered one of the biggest upsets in World Series History. The Mets reached another World Series appearance only several years later in 1973, although this time it included a game seven loss to the Oakland Athletics. New York’s two other appearances in the MLB championship came from the 1986 Mets when stars Gary Carter and Doc Gooden helped the Mets to a win over the Boston Red Sox and a loss in 2000 in what is known as the Subway Series against their cross-town rival New York Yankees. Some of the greatest players who have ever taken the field have worn a Mets jersey during their career, from pitching greats Tom Seaver and Pedro Martinez to sluggers Keith Hernandez and David Wright.Be sure to shop the selection of Mets collectibles from the team's current stars, such as Jacob DeGrom and Noah Syndergaard.
