The New Jersey Nets, or simply the “Nets”, was formed in 1967 under the team name New Jersey Americans. They used their present name in 1977 when they moved back to New Jersey as the ABA-NBA merger took effect.
Two years after their ABA championship in 1976, the Nets had to endure years of decline. From 1977 to 2001, they only made it to the First round of the playoffs ten times and won only once in 1983. By 2002, things started to change for the Nets as they won their first NBA Division Title and First Conference Title. They bagged another Division and Conference Title the year after.
