The Houston Rockets are an NBA franchise based out of Houston, Texas playing in the Western Conference's Southwest Division. Originally playing in San Diego for four years, the Rockets moved to Houston in 1971 and have called it their home ever since. The team has had a number of home arenas in South Texas, including the Hofheinz Pavilion at the University of Houston campus and the Astrodome before finally settling in at their current Toyota Center.
It took the team a little while to get started, but the Rockets have gone from expansion team to consistent title contender. The team is arguably best known for their dethroning of Michael Jordan and the Bulls after their first of two three-peats. Under the leadership of players like Hakeem Olajuwon and Robert Horry, the Houston Rockets took home back-to-back NBA titles in 1994 and 1995. After the departure of 2000's franchise cornerstones Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, the Rockets are once again turning in to the dominant force in the Western Conference they once were. Today, Houston is regarded to as a legitimate NBA Championship contender with superstars like James Harden loading their roster.
