They won their first game in franchise history against the Montreal Expos 11-4 at Mile High Stadium. The "Blake Street Bombers" was formed when the Rockies acquired outfielder Larry Walker. Along with Galarraga, Bichette and Vinny Castilla, the quartet hit 139 homers in the 1995 season. They won the debut game in their ballpark against the New York Mets 11-9, and proceeded to win seven of their first eight games of the season.
 
In 1997, Larry Walker became the first player to win the NL Most Valuable Player award, batting .366 with 49 homers and 130 RBI and won the first Gold Glove award in franchise history. He also came close to winning the Triple Crown award that year. Along with Walker, two other Rockies, Galarraga and Castilla hit 40 or more homers during the season.
 
The Rockies made history when they won the Opening Day game against defending NL champion San Diego Padres on April 14, 1999, with a score of 8-2. The game was also marked as the first time MLB opened the regular season outside the United States or Canada.
 
They were named "Organization of the Year" by Baseball America in 2007 after they became a major-league best 20-8, after trailing 6 games and winning 14 of 15 games, including 11 in a row.
