The Colorado Avalanche is an NHL franchise based out of Denver playing in the Western Conference's Central Division. The Avs were founded in 1972 as the WHL's Quebec Nordiques. The Nordiques played in the National Hockey League from 1979-1995 before their official move to the Mile High City. Since 1999, the Avalanche have made their home at Denver's Pepsi Center.
Despite having been in Colorado for less than 20 years, the Avalanche have consistently been one of the most competitive teams in the NHL. For eight straight years the Avalanche won their division, a record that still stands until this day. In 1996, the Nordiques/Avalanche franchise took home their first Stanley Cup victory, sweeping the Florida Panthers in four games. Only several seasons later in 2001, the Avs returned back to the top of the hockey world when they won their second Stanley Cup, this time over the New Jersey Devils. The two-time Stanley Cup champion team has been home to some of the game’s most legendary players, like Ray Bourque, Peter Forsberg, and their current head coach Patrick Roy.
With the help of a young core of players, the Colorado Avalanche are now back at the top of the Western Conference standings.
