The Butler Bulldogs is the varsity sports teams of the Butler University. These participated in a total of 19 NCAA Division I intercollegiate sports. After Bulldogs left the Horizon League that follows the 2011 to 2012 season, almost all teams have competed in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Butler Bulldogs football team is one of the founding members of the FCS-level Pioneer League, which is non-scholarship. On the 20th of March 2013, the administration of the Butler University has announced that the school would also join the Big East, and has decided to move to a new league on the 1st of July 2013.
Back then, it was clear that the athletics was destined to play a main role in shaping the Butler University. When the school has moved to its latest Fairview campus location, 2 of the very first structures that were completed are 15,000-seat fieldhouse and a football stadium that is 36,000-seat.
The football stadium is known as the Butler Bowler that was built in the year 1927. The original stadium had a total of 36,000 seats and has already hosted games versus other teams from Illinois like Four Horsemen from Notre Dame as well as Red Grange.
