The Brooklyn Nets are an NBA franchise based out of Brooklyn, New York playing in the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division. The Nets franchise began in 1967 as founding members of the newly formed American Basketball Association. In the ABA, the Nets who were then based in New York proved to be one of the most dominant in the entire league, taking home championships in both 1974 and 1976. Also during the franchise’s time in the ABA, the Nets acquired one of the greatest basketball players to ever take the court. In 1973, New York acquired the electrifying forward, Julius “Dr. J” Erving, a high flying human highlight reel that led the Nets to some of their best seasons in franchise history. Behind Dr. J, the team won two league championships in three years before making the jump to the NBA for the 1976 season. Form 1970’s through the 1990’s, the Nets struggled to find consistency, as they constantly missed the NBA Playoffs or lost immediately in the first round. Finally at the turn of the century, New Jersey revamped their team and started to put out successful results on the court. In 2000, the Nets selected forward Kenyon Martin with the first pick in the NBA Draft, who went on to lead the team’s front court during some of its greatest years. With the help of point guard Jason Kidd, young superstar Richard Jefferson, and sharp shooter Kerry Kittles, New Jersey was able to take home back-to-back Eastern Conference championships in 2002 and 2003. Kidd went on to put together one of the most prolific careers any guard in basketball has ever had and his #5 was later retired by the team in 2013. Under new ownership from Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov and rap mogul Jay-Z, the Nets left New Jersey for the brand new Barclay’s Center and a fresh start in Brooklyn in 2012. The team was rebranded as the Brooklyn Nets, with a classic black and white color scheme and logo that signified an iconic Brooklyn subway sign. Prokhorov had no problem shelling out money to star players during his first several years in management as he wanted to immediately turn the franchise back in to title contenders. Brooklyn hired their former cornerstone player Jason Kidd as head coach and signed big name free agents Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to lucrative contracts as a part of his “win now” mentality. Despite not having won a title in Brooklyn yet, the Nets have gone from the cellar of the Eastern Conference standings to one of the most competitive teams in the league. With the help of all-star point guard Deron Williams, Pierce, Garnett, and scoring master Joe Johnson, the Nets are currently seeking to take once again return to the NBA Finals and take home the franchise’s first championship win since 1976.
