Sources say that it was in the year 1926 in the month of October when the UA president whose name is John Salmon died in a freak car accident. It is said in his final words he had for coach McKale he wanted the Wildcats to BEAR DOWN and in that remembrance the association of the students adopted BEAR DOWN which is now their official motto.
