Ty Cobb, one of the game s first great players, dominated his era with a strong bat, and incredible speed. Known for playing the game with grit and determination, his style of play often went to the edge of the rules, and sometimes, even beyond the rules. He was rumored to have sharpened his cleats before each game so that he could spike his opponents as he slid into a base. Regardless of what you thought of his aggressive tactics, there was no denying his on the field accomplishments. He retired with 4,189 hits, an all time record that stood for fifty years. His 892 career stolen bases were considered the standard of the modern era, and this mark was also not surpassed for fifty years.
