A member of the Mets' 1969 World Series Championship squad, "Tom Terrific" went on to win three Cy Young Awards and was named to 12 All-Star teams. In his 20-year career, he won 311 games with a 2.86 ERA, and recorded 3,272 strikeouts. His 16 opening-day starts is a major league career record, as is his achievement of striking out 200 or more batters in nine consecutive seasons (1968-76). After New York, Seaver played for the Cincinnati Reds, with whom he pitched a no hitter in 1978, and then the Boston Red Sox, with whom he won the American League Pennant in 1986. Tom Seaver retired in 1987 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992 with the highest-ever percentage of votes of any inductee. |
