Payne Stewart won his first major championship at the 1989 PGA Championship at Kemper Lakes where he entered the final round six strokes back and shot 67 for a one shot margin of victory. Two years laster, he captured the 1991 U.S. Open in an 18-hole playoff over Scott Simpson at Hazeltine National. Payne's most prolific win came at the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, sinking a 20 foot par putt on the final hole to win by one stroke.
