Late fall is prime time for NCAA football. Tons of great games have already been played, and there are still plenty of key games to look forward to. The Florida Gators got revenge on the Georgia Bulldogs in Jacksonville to take control over the SEC East. And in the SEC West, it’s all about undefeated Alabama Crimson Tide. But they’ve still got two tough divisional games to play against the Auburn Tigers and with last year’s BCS Champion, the LSU Tigers.
The USC Trojans were early favorites to win the BCS Championship, but a tough loss to Oregon State may keep the Trojans out of the big show. The Texas Longhorns grabbed the No. 1 spot in the rankings with a convincing win over the Oklahoma Sooners, but a big loss to Texas Tech could make it hard for the Longhorns to make it to Miami. Fans of the Missouri Tigers and the Texas A&M Aggies are hoping their teams will make a better showing in the Big 12 in 2009.
The Penn State Nittany Lions are firmly in control of the Big Ten. They’ve already taken care of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Wisconsin Badgers in their conference, and there’s talk that Joe Pa’s team could play for another national championship. With their first losing season since 1967, the Michigan Wolverines won’t play in a bowl game for the first time in 34 years.
There’s great football being played in the ACC this year too. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are in the top 25 this year, as well as Bobby Bowden’s Florida State Seminoles. Tommy Bowden was so lucky—he stepped down earlier this season when his Clemson Tigers didn’t live up to pre-season expectations.
Don’t forget about the great games still on the horizon. The Syracuse Orangemen will take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in November, and the Virginia Tech Hokies play the Virginia Cavaliers a few weeks later. Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans are looking forward to this year’s game against one of their oldest rivals, the Navy Midshipmen. Two other BCS independents—the Air Force Falcons and the Army Black Knights already faced off this season, and Air Force came away with the win.
Football isn’t the only NCAA sport going on this late in the fall. College basketball is right around the corner. The
North Carolina Tarheels are No. 1 in preseason polls, and in-sate rivals the
Duke Blue Devils aren’t far behind at No. 4. Old favorites like the
Indiana Hoosiers and the Kentucky Wildcats are looking ahead to big things this season. Could this be the year that an old powerhouse takes back the national title?
