In 1979, when Larry Bird joined the Boston Celtics, he launched a new era in basketball, both in Beantown and throughout the NBA. Bird got his start in a small Indiana town, where he led Springs Valley High School to the state sectional championship. In 1979, Bird led Indiana State to the NCAA Championship Game. Turning pro at a time when the league and the Celtics needed a boost, Bird and fellow rookie sensation Magic Johnson rejuvenated the NBA world. Bird's court savvy, deft passing, and clutch shooting forever redefined the small forward position and turned the Celtics into winners. When Bird retired in 1992, he held or shared 27 Celtics' records and brought three more NBA championship banners to Boston (1981, 1984, and 1986). At the end of his legendary thirteen-year career with the Celtics, Bird's famous number 33 jersey was retired by the team. Robert Parish rarely showed his emotions on the court, but his play spoke volumes about his immense talent. The 7-foot-1, 244 pound Parish was among basketball's best big men when it came to running the floor. His trademark high-arching jumper was nearly impossible to block and made him a difficult player to guard on the perimeter. A superbly conditioned athlete Parish played in more seasons (21) and games (1,611) than any player in history, when he retired following the 1997 season. Parish formed, along with Larry Bird and Kevin McHale, the Boston Celtics' "Big Three," widely regarded as one of the greatest frontlines in NBA history. A tenacious rebounder who used his long arms and adept positioning to average over 10 rebounds a game for ten seasons, Parish holds the NBA record for defensive rebounds (10,117) and most playoff offensive rebounds (571). His intimidating presence down low made him a formidable shot blocker, one of the ten best in NBA history upon retirement. At 6-foot-10 and 225 pounds, Kevin McHale's nearly unstoppable array of low post moves -- some of which he never did twice in the same game -- revolutionized pivot play. With the Boston Celtics, he teamed with Hall of Famers Larry Bird and Robert Parish to form one of the greatest frontlines in basketball history. Although known for his happy-go-lucky attitude off the court, at game time his playing was precise. Celebrated for his high-percentage shooting, McHale was the first player in NBA history to shoot 60 percent from the field and 80 percent from the foul line in the same season. Defensively, McHale's long arms made him impassable and earned him All-Defensive First-Team honors three times.
