During his 13 years in Yankee pinstripes Don Mattingly terrorized opposing pitchers winning the American League batting title in 1984 and the American League MVP in 1985. Don would go on to win 9 Gold Gloves and be named to All-Star teams from 1984 thru 1989. His on field tenacity and his power at the plate earned Mattingly the title of "Donnie Baseball". He finished his illustrious career with 2,153 hits, 222 home runs, 1,099 RBI's, and a .307 lifetime batting average. He is quite possibly the best Yankee player to have never played in a World Series with the team. On August 31, 1997 the Yankees retired his number 23 and dedicated his plaque for Monument Park at Yankee Stadium. The plaque calls him "A humble man of grace and dignity, a captain who led by example, proud of the Pinstripe tradition and dedicated to the pursuit of excellence, a Yankee forever."
