The former chairman of the Cleveland-based American Shipbuilding Company Steinbrenner purchased the Yankees with no prior baseball experience. But his competitive nature and his background as an assistant football coach at Purdue and Northwestern gave him all the edge he would need. Additionally his cleverness as a businessman helped make him a successful owner. Three years after Steinbrenner purchased the Yankees the club reached the World Series. With Steinbrenner as owner New York has won the World Series six times most recently in 2000 when the Bombers defeated their cross-town rivals the Mets in 2000.
