Daisuke Matsuzaka earned his reputation as one of the world's best pitchers during his days with the Seibu Lions in his native Japan. After an intense bidding war for his rights and then a contract negotiation Matsuzaka signed with the Boston Red Sox prompting many observers to suggest he could be the man who finally nudges the Red Sox past the Yankees in the standings not to mention the hearts and minds of baseball fans across the country. As of late May 2007 Matsuzaka had a 6-2 record and the Red Sox were in first place in the AL East.
