    Despite a log jam at the top of the national college football scene that year which consisted of Florida St., Notre Dame, Florida, and undefeated teams Nebraska and West Virginia, Florida St. and Nebraska were picked to play each other in the Orange Bowl. The Seminoles, led all season by Charlie Ward, ended up on the good side of an 18-16 score due in no small part to a last-minute Scott Bentley field goal. Nebraska, trying not to be outdone, marched down the field in time to attempt a 45-yard field goal with time winding down on the clock and the season. The kick was no good, giving the Seminoles their first ever National Championship.
