The present league is made more fun by its 30 franchise member clubs. Commissioned by David Stern, the National Basketball Association was founded on 1946 in New York City. Currently, games and playoffs are shown in ABC, NBA TV, TNT and ESPN.
According to sources, NBA became more popular when Michael Jordan decided to join the league in 1984 and played with the famous Chicago Bulls. Aside from Jordan, there were also great players who became fan favorites like Larry Bird who has been a three-time NBA Most Valuable Player award winner, Karl Malone who last played with the Los Angeles Lakers and Scottie Pippen—seven-time NBA All-Star selection.
Presently, the League is viewed and talked about with the fantastic playoffs of the Boston Celtics which already bagged 17 NBA Championships, Miami Heat—eight-time Division Title holder and the Dallas Mavericks who amazingly won the NBA Championship in 2011.
NBA is currently a member of the USA Basketball—recognized by International Basketball Federation. It was in 1949 when the league adopted its current name since it was still known as the Basketball Association of America.
Aside from the NBA Championship, the League also gives out individual awards like the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player, the well known Rookie of the Year, J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, Defensive Player of the Year, Most Valuable Player and other awards. Based on reviews, the All-Star Game MVP and the one of a kind Rookie of the Year served as the first individual awards given to outstanding players.
