Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver Canucks jerseyThe Vancouver Canucks jersey has been in a state of transition ever since the hockey team joined the NHL in 1970. Back then, the home jersey was long-sleeved and white, with both a dark green and a blue band on the bottom. The collar had dark blue and white stripes, while center of the chest featured a blue and white team logo. The sleeves had a dark green band around the elbow, a blue band around the forearm, and blue cuffs, all separated by white stripes. On the upper sleeve were printed dark blue numbers, and on the back there were large blue block numbers. The away version of this jersey was dark blue with long sleeves and green and white accents. Stylistically, it was similar to the home jersey, with a few minor differences.

Just a few years later in 1972 the striping pattern on the Vancouver Canucks jersey was slightly altered. The sleeves of the white home jersey now had a dark blue band around the elbow, followed by a thicker dark green band, and a dark blue cuff. The three colors were separated by white stripes. Three thick bands in dark blue, dark green, and then again dark blue decorated the bottom of the jersey, each separated by a thin white stripe. Numbers were printed on the upper sleeve and on the back in a dark blue block font, and the Canucks logo rested on the chest. The dark blue away jersey was identical except that the logo was done in alternate colors and the numbers were all white.

A radical redesign was completed in 1978. These bright yellow jerseys and their infamous V pattern featured black and orange Vs in the center of the front, with black and orange angled stripes on the shoulders. On the upper sleeves was printed a small Canucks logo, and the wrists featured small black numbers. The back of the jerseys had black block numbers, and, for the first time, the name players’ names, printed in red. Stylistically identical to the home jersey, the away version was black with yellow replacing black in the V and shoulder stripes. All of the numbers were now in yellow; however, the names were still printed in red. An attempt to dial down this infamous design was made in 1985; however, fans were still not thrilled.

By 1989 the Vancouver Canucks jersey returned to the original white with yellow, red, and black stripes around the elbows and at the bottom. The front featured a large circular logo, and the collar was trimmed in black and orange. Black numbers with red outline rested on each shoulder and on the back. The player’s name was also on the back in black block letters. The away version was black with yellow and red stripes around the elbows and at the bottom of the jersey. The front featured a large circular logo, and the collar was trimmed in yellow and orange. Yellow numbers with red outline rested on each shoulder and on the back, and the player’s name was printed on the back in yellow block. Greg Adams jerseys are a popular choice from this era.

1997 brought with it a new color scheme. Maroon, slate blue, silver, and dark blue stripes wrapped around the bottom of the jersey, and angled around the forearms. A new “C” logo was featured on the front, and the collar was trimmed in maroon and dark blue. Numbers on the shoulders and back were printed in dark blue and outlined in maroon, and the player’s name on the back was dark blue. The dark blue away version was similar in design, with only minor color variations.

Finally, in 2008 the Vancouver Canucks jersey returned to the former 1972 style, updating only the logo on the front to the new “C” style. Roberto Luongo jerseys, Luc Bourdon jerseys, and Mats Sundin jerseys all follow this design style.
