Towson Tigers
The Towson Tigers Jersey is the jersey worn by all of the athletics teams from Towson University. The jersey colors are black and gold, and their logo is a black-striped golden tiger head beneath the word “Towson”, but the team was formerly known as the Towson College Knights. The school was originally established in 1866 as a school for training teachers and it wasn’t until the 1920’s that the athletics program at Towson University came into being. The teams from Towson University compete in the Division I Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), fielding twenty Division I teams overall. The gymnastics athletics program at the school does not compete in the CAA but instead in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Some of the Division I sports teams which Towson University fields are also nationally recognized. For instance, the men’s lacrosse team participates in the NCAA tournament on a regular basis. Several prodigious players have been produced from the major Towson sports and have gone on to play professionally. The University is also expanding its athletics program by constructing a new 5000 seat stadium called Tiger Arena. The construction is starting in 2011 and should be finished by 2013.
Towson Tigers’ football has a history going back 41 years. During that history they have only had four coaches and have competed in Division III, Division II, and Division I-AA (FCS). They currently compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. Several professional football players have come out of the Towson Tigers athletic program. One such player is Chad Scott. Scott was picked twenty-fourth overall in the 1997 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Later he signed on as a free agent with the New England Patriots. Another former Tiger is Dave Meggett. In Meggett’s second season of play he lead the NFL in punt return yards, and in that season helped the Giants win against the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV. Sean Landeta was also a former Towson Tiger. Landeta won two different Super Bowl championship rings in the Super Bowl XXI and Super Bowl XXV while playing for the giants. He was also the last United States Football League (USFL) player to retire from the NFL. Towson University has also been supported by other famous NFL players, such as Johnny Unitas (for whom they named their current stadium).
Towson Tigers’ baseball is also a successful program and just recently has produced professional players. Casper Wells was drafted in the fourteenth round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft by the Detroit Tigers. He has been recalled twice since then (both in 2010) once in place of Enrique Gonzalez, and earlier that month he was recalled in place of the pitcher Alfredo Figaro.
