Phoenix Suns
In a controversial move, in game two during the Western Conference Semifinals in the 2010 playoffs against the San Antonio Spurs, the Phoenix Suns wore uniforms that said “Los Suns” in honor of their Latino fans on Cinco de Mayo. One sports reporter call it an “unprecedented political statement by a sports team”. It coincided with the controversial immigration policies enacted in Arizona. The uniform, however, was not new since it had been used at NBA Noche Latina events since 2007. Though no player has entered the NBA Hall of Fame based mainly on their tenure with the Phoenix Suns, there are three that spent a significant part of their careers with the Suns. Hall of Famer Charles Barkley played on the Suns from 1992 to 1996. The legendary Connie Hawkins played on the Suns from 1969 to 1973. Dennis Johnson was on the Suns from 1980 to 1983. The Connie Hawkins jersey is quite a collector’s item, as is the Charles Barkley jersey. The great Hall of Famer Gail Goodrich spent some time in middle of his career at Phoenix, 1968 to 1970. Over the years, a number of Phoenix Suns jerseys have been retired in honor of great players. Those inducted into the so-called Ring of Honor include: Dick Van Arsdale, Jersey #5, guard; Walter Davis, Jersey #6, guard; Kevin Johnson, Jersey #7, guard; Dan Majerle, Jersey #9, forward; Tom Chambers, Jersey #24, forward; Alvan Adams, Jersey #33, center; Charles Barkley, Jersey #34, forward; Connie Hawkins, Jersey #42, forward; Paul Westphal, Jersey #44, guard. Non-players have also been inducted into the Ring of Honor: Joe Proski, the teams only athletic trainer for the first 32 seasons; Lowell “Cotton” Fitzsimmons, recognized as one of the greatest NBA coaches of all-time with a 341-208 record while coaching the Phoenix Suns; Jerry Coangelo, four-times named NBA business executive of the year. Since joining the NBA in 1968, the Phoenix Suns have won their division six times, in 1981, 1993, 1995, 2005, 2006, and 2007. They have won their conference title two times, in 1976 and 1993. Among current Suns players, two time NBA Most Valuable Player Steve Nash jerseys are very popular. |
