Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers jersey made its debut in 1963 when the Syracuse Nationals(1949-1963) moved to Philadelphia and became known by their present name. Their original jersey was a throw-back to a Betsy Ross-inspired pattern of a circle blue stars, both on the shorts and on the back of the jersey surrounding the player's number. They kept this look until the middle of the 1965 season—with only minor alterations—then changed their jersey to a two-tone red and white version with a high waistband. The trunks were long and baggy, and were considered by the players to be uncomfortable and flashy, so this new look was abandoned after it's first season.
In 1966 the Sixers opted for a more simple and straightforward look which became a blue jersey trimmed with white and large red block letters also trimmed in white. This was their uniform during their first championship run in the 1966-67 season.
The 70's brought a uniform change about every two years, alternating the combination of their signature red, white and blue colors in one form or another over that decade. It was during these years that the name on the front of the jerseys changed from ”Philadelphia” to “Sixers,” with the font changing as regularly as the colors.
The next 13 years saw the NBA begin to regulate uniform changes, and they required that they be notified by the team one year in advance of any forthcoming design change. It was during this time that the all-red jersey with large white letters and numbers became a Sixers hallmark. The jersey also changed from a round-neck style to a v-neck at this time. They used blue to trim out the white lettering and also to bring out the white trim around the neck and sleeves.
The 1991-94 seasons saw a revamping in the Sixers uniform, designed by Champion Products, and it now featured a royal blue background curving upward towards the name, dotted with multicolored red, white, and blue stars. This too was short-lived and by the end of the '94 season, the Philadelphia Sixers reverted back to their classic look.
The next few years saw several changes, including a more 'modern' look utilizing silver, gold, and black. But in 2009, the Sixers decided to bring back the team's popular red, white, and blue look to complement their new “76ers Basketball” logo. Their home jersey is white with blue lettering and red numbers, and road jersey is red trimmed in white and blue, with white lettering and numbers.
The Sixers have had many famous players over the years, but some of the most popular jerseys are those of Julius Erving, Andre Iguodala, Allen Iverson, and the legendary Wilt Chamberlain.
