NY Mets
The New York Mets jersey has a good bit of variety and reflects the uniqueness of New York City. The team’s colors are blue, orange, white, and black. Black was not added till the 1998 season. The four colors come from the colors of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants: two teams that moved from New York to Los Angeles and San Francisco. The name “Mets” is short for “Metropolitans.” The badge logo used by on the sleeve of New York Mets jerseys is full of symbolism. It has several buildings: a church spire for Brooklyn’s many churches, the Williamsburg Savings Bank which is Brooklyn’s tallest building, the Woolworth Building, the Empire State Building, and the United Nations Building. A bridge spans the front of this badge, and “Mets” and baseball stitches overlap the buildings. The Mets currently have four main jersey designs: two for home games and two for away games. The standard New York Mets jersey at home is a white uniform. Blue text with an orange border appears on the jersey: the word “Mets” in a cursive font and the players number are on the front. A blue hat with orange letters “N” and “Y” and blue socks complete this uniform. The primary away jersey is gray with the words “New York” and a player’s number on the front. The hat and socks for the away Mets jersey are black. The alternate Mets jersey for home games is like the primary home jersey, but the shirt and pants are cream with blue pinstripes. The alternate away jersey has a black shirt with the cursive Mets logo, and white pants. The logo for the Mets has stayed very stable for most of the team’s life. There are just two text logos: “Mets” in cursive script and “New York” in all caps. The New York Mets are the first Major League Baseball team to use a mascot designed as a human (not an animal or object): Mr. Met. They have a strong rivalry with the New York Yankees, of course, since they live on opposite sides of the same town. Being in different leagues, however, prevented them from playing each other much before the introduction of regular season interleague play in 1997. They also have standing rivalries against the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves. The Mets have played in the World Series four times and won it twice. Twelve Hall of Famers played in New York Mets jerseys at one time, including Roberto Alomar, Yogi Berra, Rickey Henderson, Willie Mays, Nolan Ryan, and Warren Spahn. The Tom Seaver jersey pictured in the Hall of Fame is his Mets jersey. His jersey number is 41 and was retired in 1988.
