New York Islanders
The History of the New York Islanders’ Jersey
In 1972 the Islanders began their career with a traditional style jersey. Their colors were orange and royal blue with a circular logo containing the letters NY and the outline of the New York island. The home jerseys were white with orange and blue stripes, while the away jersey was royal blue with white and blue stripes. This design was used, with only minor changes, until 1995.
For the 1995-96 season, the Islanders changed their logo and designed a new jersey. The logo replaced the letters NY with a fisherman holding a hockey stick and had blue and orange waves under the fisherman. The stripes on the sleeves and waist were changed to resemble a wave by making the sleeve stripes uneven. Also, the blue was changed from a royal blue to navy blue.
Fans did not respond well to the new fisherman logo, and by the end of the season the Islanders had designed a new jersey. Everything about the new jersey was the same except with the original NY crest replacing the fisherman logo. This jersey was used from 1996-98 when a new manager redesigned the jersey again. This jersey was similar to the first jersey, but used the navy blue and orange from the 1995 design. A new shoulder logo was designed with four alternating stripes of orange and blue or white to represent their four Stanley Cup victories. This jersey was used until 2007 when all NHL teams began using Reebok EDGE jerseys.
The 2007 jersey was the same coloring with white being the road jersey and navy for home. Some striping was changed on the sleeves and laces were added at the neck. The New York Islanders created a third jersey that was royal blue with white lettering like the 1972 jersey. This third jersey will become the home jersey for the 2010-11 season.
The New York Islanders’ History and Highlights
In their first season, the New York Islanders played with an inexperienced team and their record of 12-60-6 represented the new team. In the second season, they were still last in the league, but things were improving and they allowed fewer goals than the first season and scored more often. However, by the fourth year they were setting 100-point records for the NHL and that was only the first of four consecutive 100-point seasons for the islanders.
Despite losing money and struggling to make it to playoffs, the 1980s are considered the best years for the Islanders. After years without entering the playoffs, the Islanders won the Stanley cup in 1980. The winning streak continued for four years and their logos and jerseys represent the four Stanley Cup victories that they are known for. Famous players include Mike Bossy, Brian Trottier, Clark Gillies and Bob Nystrom.
