Kentucky Wildcats
The Kentucky Wildcats and Basketball are practically synonyms. Not only is the school the winningest program in the history of college basketball in wins and win percentage, they also boast the most trips to the NCAA tournament, as well as the most victories in the tournament.
Alex Groza a member of the Fabulous Five squad that won the 1948 and 1949 NCAA championships, Groza’s dominance on the court for the Wildcats was amazing. As both the center and captain of the national championship winning teams, Groza’s contribution to the legacy of the school is an immense one. Cliff Hagan can be labeled a saviour of the program. Because of a point shaving scandal, the University of Kentucky Men’s Basketball team was disbanded for the 1952 season. Despite this punishment, Hagan stayed with the team setting scoring records and eventually graduating from school.
Jared Lorenzen however, helped to prove that the Wildcats are not only restricted to successes on the basketball court but also can achieve successes on the football field as well. What sets Lorenzen apart is his ability to guide the team through on the field controversy. Having to go through two head coaching changes, he managed to keep the level of his play at a high level and lead the team to appearances in bowl games on several occasions, as well as broke school records in the process
Andre Woodson followed in the footsteps of Lorenzen as the quarterback of the Wildcats football team leading the Wildcats to back to back Music City bowl berths, Woodson’s athleticism and leadership abilities helped to solidify the team after the tumultuous previous years.
The colors employed in all of the University of Kentucky jerseys (regardless of the sport) are blue and white, with blue being the more prominent. It is because of this that the fans themselves have been given the nickname Big Blue nation. Even though it is the same school, the rivalries in which the Wildcats are a part change from sport to sport. In football, their arch-rival is Tennessee. Despite being mired in a long losing streak to their southern neighbors, the highlight of each year is the annual contest. In basketball, the arch-rivals for the Wildcats come from the state of North Carolina. The Duke Blue Devils and North Carolina Tar Heels, two of the most successful clubs in the history of college basketball, frequently challenge the Wildcats basketball program for the national title.
So regardless of the sport, be ready to support the Wildcats whoever the foe happens to be. When game day arrives, and either a trip to the national championship final or a bowl game berth are at stake, you can be suited up and ready to cheer your cats on to victory.
