Georgia Bulldogs
Since their beginnings in 1892, the Georgia Bulldogs jersey and uniform combinations have used red, grey, black, and white. The early Georgia Bulldogs jersey was red. In the 1960’s, the red jersey was combined with silver pants and a silver helmet. From the 1970 to around the 90’s, the uniform design centered around a white jersey with red stripes and black numbering or a red jersey with white numbering. Throughout the following years, the color of their jersey changed several times, shifting between red, white, and black options. Today, the Georgia Bulldogs have two main versions of their uniform. Both combinations use a red and grey combination. When playing home games, the team wears a red jersey with a red helmet and grey pants. At away games, the jersey color switches to white, the pants to gray, and the helmet to red. The team has one more combination, the “blackout,” which is rarely used: black jersey, grey pants, red helmet. The blackout is a special occasion jersey, most recently and popularly worn in 2007 against Auburn.
Popular team jerseys include the Greg Blue jersey, the Jonathan Kilgo jersey, the Quinton Moses jersey, and the Marcus Stroud jersey.
The Georgia Bulldogs Silver Britches
Perhaps more well-known than the the Georgia Bulldogs jersey itself, the team’s silver britches are a time-honored tradition. First instituted in 1939 by Coach Wally Butts, the silver pants created a striking contrast with the team’s red jersey. Fans quickly caught on, developing cheers centered around the pants. By the 1950’s the pants seemed and irremovable part of the teams uniform; however, in 1964, Coach Vince Dooley disagreed and changed the pants color to white. He brought the silver britches back in 1980, a year which, ironically, turned into one the team’s most successful seasons.
History of the Georgia Bulldogs
Founded in 1892, the Georgia Bulldogs have played ball for close to 120 years. Their first year playing included only two games. The first game, against Mercer, brought them a 50-0 victory. Their second game against Auburn, however, marked the beginning of the “South’s Oldest Rivalry” when Auburn beat the Bulldogs 10-0. Although the Bulldogs have an excellent track record, 1980 ranks as one of their most notable years. Under the leadership of Coach Vince Dooley, coach from 1964 to 1988, the team made their way to the 1980 National Championship as well as a number of SEC Championships. The team fell from prominence for a bit but made a return to fame under the direction of Mark Richt, coach since 2001. Among Richts successes with the Bulldogs are SEC Championships in 2002 and 2005 and a five bowl winning streak.
