Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers jersey has changed a few times over the team’s 100 year history, and has been a large part of the team’s history. The team began playing professional baseball in 1901 in Detroit, Michigan, and was preceded by multiple baseball teams in the city however the team was the first team in Michigan to compete in the country’s Major League Baseball league.  In 1901, the team began playing with jerseys that were light in color and had dark lettering across the front. The team’s original jerseys had no numbers, and players were only recognized by their faces or habits. The Detroit Tigers jerseys were first changed in 1905, when the team added an Old English “D” to the uniform. This symbol continues to be associated with the Detroit Tigers jerseys, and is a key part of the uniform to this day. The team also added dark uniforms for away games in that year, and continued to wear the white colored uniforms for games played in Detroit. The uniform remained the same until 1927, when the Old English lettering was briefly replaced with a small tiger. The team changed the logo back almost immediately, and the lettering has been on the team’s uniforms ever since. This uniform continued to be used for decades, and saw many successful seasons and players. In 1968, the team won 103 games and won the sport’s World Series and became the world champions of Major League Baseball. The team won another World Series championship in 1984, when they won 104 regular season games, a team record. The same jerseys continued to be used in the early 2000s, and saw another highly successful team in 2006. During this year, the team won the American League Championship, but was defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. The uniform that saw all of these successful teams was last modified in 2010, when the Detroit Tigers jerseys had the team name in diagonal letters across the front of the uniform. The Detroit Tigers have retired 5 jersey numbers, and have seen hundreds of all stars come and go. The team has recently built a new stadium to accompany its fans, and the stadium is located near the Detroit Lions’ new stadium. Some of the most popular jerseys throughout the team’s history include Miguel Cabrera’s jersey, Al Kaline’s jersey, Hank Greenberg’s jersey, Justin Verlander’s jersey and many others. There are dozens of hall of famers that have worn Detroit Tigers jerseys, and many successful players have played their home games in front of thousands of cheering Detroiters. Overall, the Detroit Tigers jersey’s history is filled with tradition, and is an accurate representation of the tradition that is associated with one of the league’s oldest teams.
