Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions jersey is one of the oldest jerseys in the Midwest area, and since 1930, they have worn the blue and white jerseys. The Lions were originally known as the Portsmouth Lions, but 1934, the team moved to Detroit, and changed their name to the Detroit Lions. The team started off with the famous blue and white jerseys, similar to the ones that are still worn today. These uniforms consisted of a plain silver helmet, silver pants, and, depending on whether they were home or away, white or blue jerseys. The team was fairly successful in their early years, and in 1933, they were defeated by the Chicago Bears in the championship game that was held at Wrigley Field. This game was interesting because it was considered the first arena football game because the stadium was only large enough for an 80 yard field. In 1948, the Lions briefly changed to maroon jerseys because of Bo McMillin’s influence by the Indiana Hoosiers. Since then, the team has rarely changed aspects of their uniforms, and the only changes that have been made have been minor. The team has changed the color of the numbers, the silver stripe patter, and the location of the numbers. Some of the minor experiments that have been attempted were blue pants with white jerseys. The team’s logo has always been the blue lion, and in recent years, it was changed to be more fierce looking lion with teeth. This change was made after the Lions became the first team to lose all 16 games in the NFL regular season. The Lions are famous for their Honolulu Blue jerseys, but the team has also recently become infamous for being one of the worst teams in NFL history. The Detroit Lions have also worn some of their old throwback uniforms lately, but these uniforms are extremely similar to the uniforms that are currently worn by the Lions’ team.

Although the Lions have been disappointing since the retirement of Barry Sanders, there is hope for a return to the successful days of Detroit Lions’ football. Jersey sales have spiked recently, and Ndamukong Suh’s jersey is one of the most popular jerseys sold. Of course Pro Bowler Calvin Johnson’s jersey sells very well among Detroit’s fans as well.  California alumni Jahvid Best was another great addition, and the team hopes to build a successful future around these athletic players. These young players provide hope for the future of professional football in Detroit, but it is definitely going to be an uphill battle. The team in Honolulu blue has a rich history, but in order to overcome the Detroit Lions’ recent turmoil, players like Matthew Stafford and other young players will need to step up and work hard to get back on top of the National Football League and be an annual competitor again in this league.
