Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys’ jerseyThe Dallas Cowboys’ jersey has changed very little since the team’s debut in 1960. Back then, the home jersey was primarily navy blue with white sleeves. A small, navy blue star rested on each shoulder, and white numbers on the front and back made for easy viewing from the stands. For away games, the team wore white jerseys with navy blue sleeves. These away jerseys featured a navy blue star on each shoulder, as well as navy blue numbers on the front and back.

1964 brought with it a simpler look for the Dallas Cowboys’ jersey. The team opted to alter their white jerseys, changing the accent color to navy blue (instead of royal blue), and establishing them as their look of choice for home games. These home jerseys were now solid white and featured 3 navy blue stripes in place of the former star on each shoulder. Navy blue numbers on the front and back, with a new set of “TV” numbers for the shoulders, completed the alteration.

The away version of the 1964 jersey was solid navy blue. On the shoulders it featured 3 white stripes as well as the new TV numbers, also done in white. White numbers on the front and back made these darker away jerseys stand out against the competition.

From 1966 to the present, a series of minor changes were made to the Dallas Cowboys jersey. In 1966, the shoulder design was changed from 3 to 2 stripes. 1967 gave the blue star on the team’s home jerseys an interior white pinstripe. From 1970-1973, the “TV” numbers were moved from the jerseys’ shoulders to their sleeves, right above the stripes. Playing from 1969-1979 and winning a Super Bowl for the team, Roger Staubach jerseys are coveted among Dallas fans. Tony Dorsett jerseys are also popular.

The indented serifs of the team’s numbers were removed in the early 1980s. Then, from 1981-1994 the numbers on the team’s navy jerseys were changed to grey with white borders and a blue pinstripe. The sleeves’ stripes were altered to match, becoming grey with a white border. By 1993, players could opt for a jersey sleeve with an elasticized band below the shoulder instead of the former elbow-length cloth sleeve (this alteration has since become standard).

The final minor change to the Dallas Cowboys jersey was made in 1996, when the word “Cowboys” was added to the center of its neckline. This was removed from the white jersey in 1998, but still remains on the team’s navy blue jersey. Troy Aikman jerseys would include this distinction.

Since 1998, there has been essentially no change to the design of the team’s jersey. The Cowboys wear their white jerseys at home, and almost always wear them when away. The navy version, which is technically supposed to be for away games, is seldom used due to the need for contrast from other teams, who typically wear their dark jerseys at home. Among the most popular jerseys available is the Herschel Walker jersey.
