Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes jerseys have actually been around longer than the team itself. This is because the team that is now known as the Carolina Hurricanes was introduced into the National Hockey League as the Hartford Whalers. This team began in 1971, in Hartford, Connecticut, and with it, the start of a new hockey franchise. The first jerseys were white, with green stripes toward the bottom of the jerseys, and the logo in the center of the shirt. The numbers were white, and they were included on the green stripes located on the arms. The original logo consisted of a harpoon and the team name displayed in the team colors of green and white. In 1979, the team changed its jerseys to a green jersey that had a white and blue striped section at the bottom. These new jerseys also had new logos to accompany them. The new logos were a “W” for Whalers, and the fin of a whale attached to the top of the W. Another logo was added to a patch on the shoulder, and this logo was a cartoon whale, and the letters “ERS” to illustrate the teams mascot. The next jersey change did not come until 1992, when the team changed its jersey color to blue, with green and white as accent colors. These jerseys were more modern looking, but the logo was unchanged.
Finally, in 1998, the franchise was relocated to Carolina, and the mascot was changed from the Whalers, to the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes changed the team’s colors from green, blue, and white, to red, black, and white, and the first jersey was red and black with a brand new logo. This new logo was worn by players such as Rod Brind’Amour and others, and was a black and red hurricane, with a white eye in the middle. In 2000, the jerseys were changed again, and talented players such as Ron Francis came to play for the Carolina Hurricanes. These jerseys were red and white, with black accenting on the lower part of the jersey, and on the sleeves. It was during this time that Cam Ward helped lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup Finals appearance where they were defeated by the Detroit Redwings. In 2007, the RBK Edge jerseys were introduced, and these jerseys had several different changes in appearance. The new design was more sleek and modern looking, with a brand new logo, but the colors remained the same. The new logo was made up of a curved hockey stick, and a red and black flag.
The Carolina Hurricanes have been fairly unsuccessful since their Stanley Cup appearance, but with the addition of young players like Eric Staal, the team has been given new hope, and fans have come from all around the Carolinas dressed in their red and white jerseys to see what the new, young talents can accomplish.
