Cancer is the one word no person wants to hear. But each year, over 1.6 million Americans are dealt the devastating news, while roughly half a million lose the battle with the incurable disease. One of these fierce fighters, and perhaps the most well-known cancer victims in the sports world, was Jimmy Valvano, a highly decorated basketball player, coach and broadcaster. Diagnosed with adenocarcinoma bone cancer in June 1992, Jimmy V lost his battle less than a year later in April 1993 at the age of 47. Just one month before his death, Valvano touched the hearts of viewers one last time with his inspirational words while receive the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the 1993 ESPYs. Giving one of the most memorable speeches in sports to date, Valvano announced the creation of The V Foundation for Cancer Research, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for a cancer. Instilling that the Foundation’s motto would always be “Don’t Give Up … Don’t Ever Give Up”, The V Foundation has awarded over $170 million in cancer research grants and become one of the leading groups of cancer research funds. Providing four different kinds of grants to scientists around the nation, The V Foundation for Cancer Research is working towards a cure for the disease that takes so many lives each year.
