Woody Abernathy, a left-handed pitcher of the New York Giants, played for the Major League Baseball in the 1946 and 1947 season. He may have only had two years with the major league, but Abernathy, had a six-year professional career in baseball, more specifically with the minor leagues. He instigated his baseball career in 1939 with the Salisbury Bees, a team based in the North Carolina. He went for the South Carolina team in 1942. From South Carolina, he joined the Western Association under the Fort Smith Giants team. He took part in success of the Giants’ by assisting the team in winning two games that pushed them in grabbing a league pennant. Playing for only one game with the International League’s Jersey City Giants, he then moved to be one of the Minneapolis Millers under the American Association.
Fresh from the Millers, Abernathy was chosen by the New York Giants in replacement of
Bob Joyce, who was with the Philadelphia Athletics before the Giants, and Rube Fisher, also a pitcher for the Giants. His first MLB match was against the Cincinnati Reds on July 28, 1946. Abernathy had seven innings. Facing the Philadelphia Phillies in a game on September 2, he played against some legendary players like
Ike Pearson, who later participated with the Chicago White Sox, and
