Woodie Fryman, or also known as the “Fleming Flame”, is a retired professional baseball player. He was a pitcher in the Major League Baseball and appeared from 1966 to 1983. He appeared in MLB teams like the Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds and the Detroit Tigers. He was a left-hander and is best remembered for throwing a total of four one-hitters in the 18 seasons that he played in the MLB.
In 1966 during his first year of playing in the MLB, he was able to pitch three shutouts. While playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1968, he was named into the National League All-Star.
In 1968, Fryman played for the Philadelphia Phillies until he was claimed off the waivers by the Detroit Tigers in 1972. During his first season with the Tigers, he was able to post a 2.06 earned run average and his win percentage of .769 made him the league’s leader. He was instrumental in the Tigers’ win against the Boston Red Sox to clinch the American League East division championship.
During the later part of his career, he switched from being a starter to a relief pitcher. Fryman was elected into the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.

He attended Fleming County (Flemingsburg, KY) high school. His debut was on April 15, 1966 and he played his final game on July 28, 1983. Over his career, Fryman made $1,127,000.
