Guglielmo Papaleo was a former professional boxer who was more famously known as Willie Pep. He started his professional boxing career on July 10, 1940 in a fight against James McGovern, after a successful amateur career. According to reviews, he spent most of his first few seasons in the professional boxing scene in New England and had his first 25 fights at the said area. However, after a few more fights, he went to make his name in California, and had his first win in the said country against Billy Spencer.
He had great start in the year 1943 after winning six fights at the beginning of the season. That time, he holds a record of 61-0, but unfortunately, he had his first loss to Sammy Angott in that year. He won a world title in that year which he acquired by winning over Jackie Wilson and the equally famous Sal Bartolo.
He had several other wins in his entire professional career before he finally retired from the sport. He left the ring with a record of 241 fights and a win-loss-draw record of 229-11-1, 65 of his wins is via knockout. He was well-remembered for his speed and precision of play and was named to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the year 1990.
