  Born in the Westfield, Alabama on May 6, 1931, Willie Mays was a former star baseball player who played with New York Giants, San Francisco Giants and New York Mets during his term. Leo Durocher, Willie Mays’ first major league manager described him as a talented player for which he also commented, saying, "He could do the five things you have to do to be a superstar: hit, hit with power, run, throw, and field…”   Mays earned several awards which include a Rookie of the Year Award in 1951; the National League Most Valuable Player Award and the Hickok Belt for being the top professional athlete of the year, both after the 1954 season; and the Gold Glove awards in 1957. These were during his years with the New York Giants.   While playing for the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets, he was able to win his second MVP award, the 1960s’ “Player of the Decade” and the second Greatest Baseball Player for The Sporting News. After his retirement in 1973 with .302 and 660 homeruns as his lifetime batting average, Mays still appeared on various activities such as in several TV shows, films and coaching stints for the New York Mets up to the year 1979. He also became a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame on January 23, 1979.
