About William Harridge Memorabilia & Collectibles
William Harridge was a former baseball figure who became the President of the American League from 1931 to 1958 and was an executive in his field. Born on October 16, 1883 in Chicago, Illinois, he began playing baseball in 1911 when he became Ban Johnson’s personal secretary. He worked for Johnson from 1911 to 1927, and achieved American league presidency in 1931. He was the president of the said league until 1958, his year of retirement. After retirement, he was designated as President Emeritus of the League. According to reviews, he was instrumental in commencing the All-Star game in the interleague which became a tradition during the summer in the league. Industry experts regarded him as a very self-effacing person who made his way up in the American League even though he did not forced himself to get what he has achieved. He was involved in an issue where Dan Tapping and Del Webb, owners of New York Yankees were allowed to buy the Philadelphia Athletics and had the team move to Kansas City. Critics said the team should have been purchased by local owners and let the team stay in Philadelphia.
Harridge died when he was 87 years old in Illinois and his remains are located at Skokie, Illinois. His legacy is remembered by the trophy named after him, the William Harridge Trophy.
