Burnis Wright, more popularly known by the name of Wild Bill Wright, is a former American pro baseball athlete who hailed from Milan, Tennessee. Wright got his nickname for his control problems as a young pitcher during his early career. Wright made his pro debut in 1932 in the Negro Leagues for the Nashville Elite Giants. And during the winter of that year, Wright played in the integrated California Winter League and had a hit average of .351, placing third behind Cool Papa Bell and Willie Wells.
From his pitching position, Wright later shifted to outfielder and in 1937, Wright became an East-West starter in center field and making the top defensive play of the game. Wright had his best year in 1939, where he had a batting average of .398 and lead the Negro Leagues with 4 triples. In 1940 Wright was one of the Negro League athletes who went to the Mexican League. And during his stint in the Mexican League, Wright had a batting average of .360, placing fifth in the league.
Wright’s 1941 season became even better as he averaged with .390 hit had twenty six steals leading the Mexican League. After his retirement in 1949, Wright stayed in Mexico and put up a restaurant. Wild Bill Wright passed away on August 3, 1996 in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
