A former Major League Baseball pitcher who was nicknamed “Whitey” for his blond and almost white hair, Whitey Ford was born in New York City, New York on October 21, 1928. He started his Major League Baseball career with the Yankees in 1950 but took a break during the Korean War in 1951 and 1952 for his service in the Army.   He came back during the 1953 season becoming the newest member of Yankees’ “Big Four”, formerly known as “Big Three” pitching staff which was composed by Allie Reynolds, Vic Raschi and Eddie Lopat. Whitey Ford was referred by Casey Stengel, the New York Yankees’ team manager, as the “money pitcher” because of accuracy and ability to manage himself as a pitcher. Ford was tagged as the “Chairman of the Board” and “Slick” for his calmness and being in command in high-pressure situations and for his artfulness on the mound.   Moreover, Ford broke the World Series record of Babe Ruth’s consecutive scoreless innings in 1961. He also won the World Series MVP including the Cy Young Award. As well as in The Sporting News list of Baseball’s Greatest Players, he ranked 52nd. He was also nominated in the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. In 1967, he retired due to a circulatory problem. Ford was portrayed by Anthony Michael Hall in “61”, a 2001 HBO movie that deals with the quest of Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle in breaking the single-season home-run record of Babe Ruth.
