Warren Spahn was considered as one of Major League Baseball history’s best left-handed pitcher. He won more games compared to other lefties. He was born in Buffalo, New York on April 23, 1921.
He started his Major League career in 1942 with Boston and then the
Milwaukee Braves and finished it with the New York Mets and
San Francisco Giants in the year 1965. He grabbed the award on The Sporting News Pitcher of the Year in the National League by the years 1953, 1957, 1958 and 1961. In 1957, Spahn earned the NL Cy Young Award. He was also able to lead the National League in wins for eight times with five seasons in a row.
Spahn became a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 and ranked as the 21st Greatest Baseball Player in 1999 for The Sporting News. He was also made into a
Major League Baseball All-Century Team member in the same year. Awarded with Purple Hearts and Bronze Star for his bravery during the World War II, he was also considered as the only person who earned a battlefield commission among the Major League Baseball’s militaries.
