Walter Payton was a professional football player who played for the
Chicago Bears throughout his entire career in the NFL. Payton was nicknamed as “Sweetness” while he was in the National Football League. Payton was known for his proficiency as a running back. Payton was a native of Columbia, Mississippi and was able to play only in the football team during his junior and senior year. However, Payton was able to show raw talent right away.
Payton decided to go to Jackson State University and was one of the best running back prospects in the country. Payton played alongside Jerome Barkum, Robert Brazile and Jackie Slater during his stay in Jackson State.
During the 1975 NFL draft, Payton was selected by the Chicago Bears during the earlier part of the first round. He broke into the team when Gale Sayers retired. During his entire stay in the NFL, Payton was named into nine Pro-Bowl selections – from 1976-1980 and in 1983-1986. During the 1977 season, Payton was named as the NFL Most Valuable Player. During that season, Payton was also named as the PFWA and the NEA MVP. During the 1977 and the 1985 seasons, Payton was named as the Player of the Year. Payton was with the Bears when the team played and won the Super Bowl XX.
