 Although he was good at playing baseball, Walter Hagen decided to play professional golf instead. He became one of the popular golfers in the early 20th century. Hagen still holds a number of records. He has won a total of 11 major golf championships making him third in the overall ranking. He is only behind Jack Nicklaus with his 18 wins and Tiger Woods with his 14 wins. In total, Hagen has won 45 PGA Tour events.

Hagen turned professional in 1912. Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Hagen grew up playing in the Country Club of Rochester. Hagen was the first professional golfer to be able to popularize the sport. He played in a number of exhibition games especially after he found out that it was sometimes more profitable to do so. He also endorsed a number of golf equipment including for the Wilson Sports brand. Players like Gene Sarazen have commended him for doing so.

Hagen was inducted into World Golf Hall of Fame in the year 1974. All in all, Hagen was able to win two U.S. Opens (1914 and 1919), four British Opens (1922, 1924 and 1928-29), and five PGA championships (1921, 1924-27). Other than that, Hagen also played for the Western Open and won five times (1916, 1921, 1926-27, and 1932).
