Walter William Weiss was a member of the National League All-Star team in 1998. He is a former shortstop who threw right-handed and batted by switching left to right and right to left hand.

 

He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 10th round of the amateur draft in 1982. He made his 1st major league appearance with the Oakland Celtics in September of 1987 at the age of 23. The team was impressed enough with the young shortstop’s talent and after a year, he was awarded the American League Rookie of the year in 1988. At the same time, he was selected for the Topps All-Rookie Roster. He noticed that his offensive numbers dipped as he struggled through injury but still made it to the World Series in 1989. He kept on playing and was injured in the American League Championship Series against Boston Red Sox in 1990. Because of his difficulties, he did not appear to play that much for Oakland in 1991. He was then traded to the Florida Marlins during the off-season. He signed with the Colorado Rockies upon entering free agency in 1993. He moved to Atlanta Braves in 1977 and made his All-Star team for the only time in his career in 1998. Overall, he had a record of 1, 207 hits and 386 runs batted in, with a .258 batting average.

Walt Weiss (full name: Walter William Weiss; no nicknames) played shortstop from 1987 until 2000 for the Oakland Athletics, Florida Marlins, Colorado Rockies and Atlanta Braves. He played for the Athletics from 1987 - 1992, Marlins in 1993, Rockies from 1994 - 1997 and Braves from 1998 - 2000. Over 14 seasons, he played 1495 games, hit 25 home runs, drove in 623 runs, and stole 96 bases. Born on November 28, 1963 in Tuxedo, NY, Weiss stands 6' 0" and weighs 175 lb. He attended Suffern (Suffern, NY) high school and was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 1st round (11th pick) of the 1985 amateur draft. His debut was on July 12, 1987 and he played his final game on October 1, 2000. Over his career, Weiss made $19,198,946. Common misspellings of his name include Walter Walt William Weiss.
