In the year 2002, Backman was elected to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
Backman retired as a baseball player in the same year. However, he remained to be an active man in the field already as a team’s coach. His first opportunity as a professional coach was with the Lancaster Jet Hawks. Two years after, he was offered by the Arizona Diamondbacks to stand as their manager. In 2006, he turned out to be South Georgia Peanuts’ manager playing for the South Coast League.
