Among the various teams he had played with in his 14 years of stay in the baseball league were the New York Mets, Minnesota Twins, Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, as well as the Seattle Mariners. Backman is well remembered as one of the most promising players during his time. He had attracted baseball fans’ attention through his outstanding performance on field. He had also established a name for himself by exerting great effort in grabbing championship titles. Backman had made history during the 1986 game with the New York Mets wherein he had set a track record of .320 batted in which had contributed much on the team’s victory. In the year 2002, Backman was elected to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
Backman retired as a baseball player in the same year. However, he remained to be an active man in the field already as a team’s coach. His first opportunity as a professional coach was with the Lancaster Jet Hawks. Two years after, he was offered by the Arizona Diamondbacks to stand as their manager. In 2006, he turned out to be South Georgia Peanuts’ manager playing for the South Coast League.

He played for the Mets from 1980 - 1988, Twins in 1989, Pirates in 1990, Phillies from 1991 - 1992 and Mariners in 1993. Over 14 seasons, he played 1102 games, hit 10 home runs, drove in 482 runs, and stole 117 bases. Born on September 22, 1959 in Hillsboro, OR, Backman stands 5' 9" and weighs 160 lb. He attended Aloha (Beaverton, OR) high school and was drafted by the New York Mets in the 1st round (16th pick) of the 1977 amateur draft. His debut was on September 2, 1980 and he played his final game on May 14, 1993. Over his career, Backman made $4,268,000.
